5 out of 5 stars Good Value, Good Performance   August 28, 2010

The detector is good overall. It does go off from interference, but that doesn't really bother me because it shows it's working. Since 90% of the interference is on the X band, which is considered obsolete for police use (I've never seen police using it either) there is a mode that doesn't detect X band, virtually eliminating false readings. I've really only seen K band used by police. I recommend this detector, but don't use it to drive dangerously..

I bought this AFTER being stopped for a $300 speeding ticket... and it has saved me a number of times already. It seems to not only "get" the radar but even alerts me to those new "cameras" at stop lights that are now taking pictures of people running them. Amazing. I am very thankful that I have this device and heartily recommend it to everyone since municipalities have begun looking to traffic fines as a way to make up for other declining sources of revenue.

5 out of 5 stars Not a lot of use (yet), but great for the price.   July 24, 2010

I was a little skeptical about the Whistler XTR-140 at first because of the very low $46.66 pricetag (compared to most other radar detectors being in the $200 range), but after reading all of the positive reviews I ordered it. The windshield mount is small, easy to put on, and the quick release on the detector is an excellent feature since I can easily put the detector away. Most don't do this but I'm paranoid after my sister got hers' stolen. The device is very simple to operate as well. As soon as you turn it on, you can adjust the volume accordingly. I have music playing all of the time so this is a great feature. Personally, I rarely find myself using the City Mode to quiet some of the weaker radar bands from automatic doors and such, but the times I have used it, it performed excellently. Detection wise this detector hasn't seen this much action, but I have been saved once when the detector chirped and the blue LED's blinked (also an excellent feature for when you quiet the device) and lo and behold, the cop was about half a mile in front of me, behind some trees. I have accepted that speeding is a fact of life and it gets me where I want to go just a little faster and the Whistler allows me to do that more safely since I am not looking for cops the entire time, and the ability to speed (still no more than nine over the limit) with a little more peace of mind.

5 out of 5 stars Saved me a lot of money in tickets   July 1, 2010

I have saved enough in insurance in 1 situation to pay for this productd. In most cases, the valid warnings were correct and properly alerted me to radar traps. In one case the person in front of me and myself were going well over the speed limit, the alarm went off, I slowed down quickly, having seen other cops in the same populated area, and sure enough a cop came ripping out from behind a bridge in front of me and pulled over the other driver. If I had not slowed down that very well could have been me or both of us. Just that one incident made this worth the price many times over. I had a few other cases as well, including just getting ready to pass someone and the warning saved me again. Note that the five star rating is not for someone that expects perfect detection. If that is you, look at the expensive $300+ models. The five stars are for a GREAT value and decent, acceptable detection. I bought the XTR-140 for a road trip. I traveled through many states and 7000+ miles so I got to use the detector quite a bit. I have to completely agree with the positive reviews I have read. Yes there were a number of what appeared to be false warnings. I say this because on desolate roads where there was practically nothing I got a warning. If you read the information on the Whistler site, the more expensive a detector is the less false warnings you get, fair enough I suppose.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the money!!!   June 21, 2010

Just purchased this and went on a road trip, it worked great, detected all radar the only thing I don't like is you must reset your settings after you turn it off. No big deal, I would recommend this over a Cobra any day, I have owned 2 Cobras and this is my second Whistler.
